The ethical and scientific arguments against animal research are well-known. Every year, around three million animal experiments take place in Great Britain, but these are failing to deliver the progress that patients so urgently need. Over 92 per cent of drugs that show promise in animal tests fail to reach the clinic and benefit patients, mostly due to problems with safety and efficacy that were not predicted by the animal tests.

The Government frequently reiterates its intention for Britain to become a ‘science superpower’ and emphasises its commitment to improving animal protection. By providing funding and policy support for modernising medical research, this would enable it to fulfil both these ambitions.
