Please write to your MP and ask them to ensure that the legal requirement to use non-animal methods wherever possible is being enforced.

We are fighting for regulatory change that will end the use of animals in laboratories. In the meantime, the lives of many animals could be saved if existing laws were properly followed and enforced.

In December, the Home Office published information on the licences for animal experiments that were granted during the first half of 2020. Tragically, this showed that 235 new licences were granted to researchers, allowing them to carry out experiments on over 5.5 million  animals over the next five years. This includes dogs, horses, rabbits, and guinea pigs as well as nearly 2 million rats and mice.

While the law requires non-animal methods be used wherever possible, recently published licence summaries sadly indicate that some researchers are treating this as little more than a tick-box exercise.
